The best free SEO tool for most small businesses is Google Search Console. It shows the real queries, impressions, clicks and indexing information Google has for your own site. It does not replace every specialist tool, so the practical answer is a small stack, with each tool assigned one job.
| Tool | Best for | Important free limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Google performance and indexing truth | Your verified properties only |
| Ahrefs Free | Backlinks and recurring site audits | Verified sites; 5,000 crawl credits per project monthly |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Detailed technical crawls | 500 URLs per crawl; advanced features restricted |
| PageSpeed Insights | Speed and Core Web Vitals | Field data needs enough real-user traffic |
| Google Business Profile | Local visibility | Eligible in-person and service-area businesses only |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Bing, technical reports and keyword data | Your verified properties only |
| rank.fast free tools | Index diagnosis, keyword ideas and AI visibility | Daily usage limits |
How we chose
We evaluated tools available at no charge on 1 September 2026. A tool had to solve a recurring small-business SEO task without requiring a paid trial. We favoured first-party data over estimates and stated the useful free limits. No company paid to appear. rank.fast is included and identified as our own product.
1. Google Search Console: best free SEO tool overall
Use Search Console to see the queries that produced impressions and clicks, which pages appeared, average position, indexing coverage and Google's record for an individual URL. Start here. Its limitation is scope: it reports your own verified properties, not competitors, and very new sites may take up to a week to show useful performance data. Google's Search Console documentation.
2. Ahrefs Free: best for backlinks and recurring audits
Ahrefs Free combines Web Analytics, Site Audit and limited Site Explorer data for verified websites. The current free allowance includes 5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month and up to 1,000 visible backlinks and keywords. It is a strong next step after Search Console. Skip it if you mainly need competitor research, which remains a paid use case. Ahrefs Free features and limits.
3. Screaming Frog SEO Spider: best desktop technical crawler
Screaming Frog follows links through a site and exposes broken links, redirects, titles, descriptions, robots directives, canonicals and duplicates in a spreadsheet-like interface. The free edition crawls 500 URLs at a time. That is generous for a typical small-business site, but it cannot save crawls and restricts advanced configuration and JavaScript rendering. 4. PageSpeed Insights: best for speed and Core Web Vitals
PageSpeed Insights tests mobile and desktop performance. Lighthouse supplies a controlled lab test; the Chrome User Experience Report supplies 28 days of real-user field data when a page or origin has enough traffic. Use the lab diagnostics to find work, but do not mistake one synthetic score for every visitor's experience. Google's PageSpeed methodology.
5. Google Business Profile: best for eligible local businesses
For a shop, clinic, tradesperson or other business that meets customers in person, a free Business Profile controls important information shown in Google Search and Maps, including hours, location or service area, contact details, photos and reviews. It is not available to online-only businesses. Google Business Profile eligibility and features.
6. Bing Webmaster Tools: best second search-engine account
Bing Webmaster Tools offers search performance, backlinks, keyword research, site scans, SEO reports and URL submission for verified sites. It is worth the short setup after Search Console, especially because Bing discovery reaches beyond Bing's own results. Its reports are not a substitute for Google data; the two accounts answer different questions. Bing's current feature list.
7. rank.fast: best for quick index and AI visibility diagnosis
This is our tool, so treat the recommendation accordingly. The free Google index checker tests an exact URL and diagnoses robots, noindex, redirect and canonical problems. The keyword tool expands Google Autocomplete into questions and comparisons. The AI visibility checker asks Claude, ChatGPT and Grok what they know about a site from memory and with web search on. There is also a technical audit delivered as a PDF. These are focused checks with daily limits, not an all-in-one suite or a replacement for Search Console.
Find the next problem to fix. Check an exact URL, generate keyword ideas, audit a site or see what AI assistants say about the business.
The free stack we would install first
For most small businesses: connect Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, claim a Business Profile if eligible, run PageSpeed Insights on the main landing pages, and use Ahrefs Free for recurring audits. Use Screaming Frog when you need the underlying crawl data. Use rank.fast when a particular URL is missing from Google or when you want to test how AI assistants describe the business.
Do not install seven dashboards merely because they are free. Each tool should answer a decision: what is found, what is broken, what is slow, what people search for, or what needs fixing next.
